Russia Suspends Import of Beef Variety Meat from Brazil
Effective June 22, Russia has suspended imports of beef variety meat from Brazil. The suspension does not appear to be region or plant-specific, covering all beef variety meat from Brazil.
In 2007, Brazil was the second-largest (after Argentina) supplier of beef variety meat to Russia. But Brazil’s presence in the market declined dramatically in 2008 and trade data indicate that Brazil has exported no variety meat in 2009 or 2010. Through March, Brazil was still this year’s largest exporter of total beef products to Russia, though its exports have declined 11 percent in volume and 23 percent in value compared to 2009.
